Developing a strategy for growing the medical technologies SME ecosystem in the North of England.
Our client, a leading UK University in the North of England, was interested in understanding the SME medical technologies ecosystem in its region. The purpose was to look for opportunities to help facilitate the growth of this key healthcare sector and assist in the Government’s industrial strategy for the UK. The assignment included identifying supply chains in the region, R&D intensity of medical technology SMEs, the potential for technology convergence to create a sum which is greater than the parts, and sources of finance employed to drive growth. A significant part of the assignment required in-depth interviews with senior members of the management teams of the SMEs identified to investigate how their companies could be helped to grow through exploiting synergies across the region, and making full use of the research capabilities of the universities to drive innovation and new product development.
