We were asked by a client to conduct primary market research by selecting and interviewing specialist orthopaedic knee surgeons to seek their views on the clinical need for a novel wearable activity monitor the company was developing.
Our client had developed a prototype device for monitoring the kinetic activity of the knee. A number of potential applications for the device were envisaged including supporting the decision to undertake replacement knee surgery and to monitor and aid rehabilitation post-surgery. A robust clinical view was required to confirm the client’s own research and help to build the business case for investment. We contacted over 80 UK based orthopaedic surgeons and of those willing to take part selected 10 for interview that had good experience of knee surgery. We then developed a questionnaire to provide consistency in the interviews, interviewed the surgeons by telephone, and summarised our findings for the client. The client is now using the findings to raise funding to further develop the product.
We are a specialist medical device consultancy consisting of industry experts with long and successful track records in commercialising medical device products. We have broad functional and sector experience, and would welcome an opportunity to discuss with you any challenge relating to creating sustainable value from medical technologies.
